Plesk Control Panel Overview

A control panel is established when a subscription is created. Customers use this panel to add and manage domains, website content, mail accounts and more. HostGator customers using Windows Shared packages will utilize this panel exclusively. Windows VPS and Windows Dedicated server customers have Administrator access and will use the Server Administration Panel for higher-level configuration and maintenance tasks, However, even administrators will use the Control Panel to create and manage their own webspaces or to access and manage customer accounts.

Python Hosting

Python is an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented, extensible programming language. It is often compared to Tcl, Perl, Scheme or Java.

Python combines remarkable power with very clear syntax. It has modules, classes, exceptions, very high level dynamic data types, and dynamic typing. There are interfaces to many system calls and libraries, as well as to various windowing systems (X11, Motif, Tk, Mac, MFC, wxWidgets). New built-in modules are easily written in C or C++. Python is also usable as an extension language for applications that need a programmable interface.

It provides an extraordinary combination of clarity and versatility, and is free and comprehensively ported. A popular server side scripting language,

RAID 0, 1, 5

RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a method for storing data on multiple hard disks, then linking the disks so that the operating system on your server views them as a single entity. RAID can be configured using either hardware or software, though hardware based RAID performs significantly better. At City & District, we offer hardware based RAID for SATA hard drives in 3 different configurations with our Dedicated Servers:

RAID 1: This type of RAID uses a method of data storage known as mirroring. This refers to the fact that every piece of data is written to at least two disks. As a result, RAID-1 offers a high degree of data security, but has a slight performance decrease because it requires capturing all data on two disks.

RAID 0: This type of RAID uses a method of data storage known as striping. The technology divides the data into pieces, and places each piece on a different drive. For instance, data piece A may be stored on Drive 1, while data piece B goes to Drive 2, C heads to Drive 3, and so on. Because the data is divided, RAID-0 offers the top level of performance for disk IO. It is usually used for multimedia applications like video editing, and for situations where data loss is not as much a concern as speed.

RAID 5: This type of RAID is the most widely used because it offers a useful combination of protection and speed. It works by making enough of the data redundant so that even if a drive fails, it's still possible to recreate and retrieve the information. Offering the best performance with data protection, this solution is ideal for high performance databases and sites that require high disk throughput.

Remote Access to MSSQL DBs

After you have created a database and assigned a database user to it, you can access it from Plesk using the Webadmin link on the Websites & Domains tab > Databases page. In this case, Plesk automatically uses the corresponding database user credentials.

Note: If the Webadmin link is missing, contact your hosting provider.

If you want to access your database using other tools (like SQL Server Management Studio) or want to give other applications access to it, you will need to provide these tools and applications with the following:

  • To connect to MySQL and PostgreSQL, you will need to provide the host name (or IP address) and the database user login and password.
  • To connect to Microsoft SQL Server, you will also need to specify the Microsoft SQL Server instance. For Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Plesk uses the MSSQLSERVER2008 named instance. Therefore, the host can be specified as\MSSQLSERVER2008 or\MSSQLSERVER2008. For Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Plesk uses the default instance (MSSQL 2005), and you do not need to specify the instance name.

Remote IIS Management

Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager for Remote Administration provides end users and administrators with the ability to securely manage remote IIS servers (version 7 and above) from Windows clients (XP and above). A Web server administrator can perform almost all IIS administrative tasks while site owners and developers that have been delegated administrative privileges can use IIS Manager for Remote Administration to make allowed changes to the remote Web server. IIS Manager for Remote offers the same user interface available on Windows Server to ensure a more consistent experience when managing and configuring the Web server.

Resource Useage

When you subscribe to hosting services, a user account is created in Plesk to allow you to manage your websites and mailboxes on your own.

You can view the following information about your account:

    Current subscriptions to service plans.

You can be subscribed to a number of service plans at once, and, therefore, can have several subscriptions associated with your account.
    Allocated and consumed resources.
Hosting features available for your websites.
Operations you can perform in your Plesk.

Scheduled Tasks

Some scripts / applications require certain scripts be run at a certain time to function properly.  On Windows servers, you can set them up to run at certain times by creating a schedule task (which is similar to how you can run cron jobs on Linux servers).

This section is for advanced users experienced in programming languages.

You can insert custom scripts written in PHP, JavaScript, or VBScript in any page of your website

Shared SSL

All City & District hosting services can use the City & District Shared SSL certificate for custom scripts and securing sensitive data. The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a commonly used protocol for managing the security of a message transmission on the Internet. SSL uses a program layer located between the Internet's Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Transport Control Protocol (TCP) layers. The "sockets" part of the term refers to the sockets method of passing data back and forth between a client and a server program in a network or between program layers in the same computer. SSL uses the public-and-private key encryption system from RSA.

With an SSL Web Server Certificate on your website, any information sent to your Web server is encrypted or scrambled, making it impossible to intercept or steal. It also displays the identity of the website owner, and the name of the independent authority who verified that identity, such as Geotrust or RapidSSL.

The shared SSL certificate that we use is just as secure as a privately owned SSL certificate; the only difference is that the shared SSL certificate address would not be branded to your Website. If this is not important to you, using the shared SSL certificate is a very economical way to secure transmission of information on your Website. Shared SSL can be used by accessing your site with the URL given in your service welcome letter. Contact Technical Support if you're not sure what that URL is or if you do not have your welcome letter.

SSH Hosting (Secure Shell Access)

At City & District, we provide SSH Web Hosting with many of our Web hosting plans. Secure Shell (SSH), sometimes known as Secure Socket Shell, is a UNIX-based command interface and protocol for securely getting access to a remote computer. It is widely used by network administrators to control Web and other kinds of servers remotely. SSH commands are encrypted and secure in several ways. Both ends of the client/server connection are authenticated using a digital certificate, and passwords are protected by being encrypted.

SSI (Server Side Includes)

(abbreviation for Server-Side Includes) is a server-side scripting language. SSI scripting commands are embedded within a webpage and are parsed and executed on the Web server to generate dynamic HTML pages. Common uses of SSI are to include files (e.g. a header or footer file) that are used on multiple pages, or to show the current date and time.

SSL Hosting (Secure Socket Layer)

SSL is an abbreviation for "Secure Sockets Layer". SSL is a transaction security standard that provides data encryption, server authentication, and message integrity. SSL is usually used on sites that accept credit card numbers or other private information. All City & District hosting services support the SSL Web hosting security standard and have access to the City & District shared SSL hosting certificate for custom scripts and securing sensitive data.

Streaming Audio/Video

Live streaming, which refers to content delivered live over the Internet, requires a form of source media (e.g. a video camera, an audio interface, screen capture software), an encoder to digitize the content, a media publisher, and a content delivery network to distribute and deliver the content.

Subdomain Hosting

With Subdomain support, you can place a word or phrase in place of the standard "www" ( and redirect all requests for that URL to a different directory within your website. Example: goes to

When signing up for a hosting service, choose the option "Use a City & District Domain", then type in any combinations of letters and/or numbers in front of "". For example

Once you have hosting, you can set up your own subdomains directly from your control panel.

Telnet is a standard Internet protocol used in accessing remote systems, like a Web server. We use SSH (secure telnet) instead of regular telnet hosting because SSH offers increased security over regular telnet. SSH hosting offers all of the features telnet does in addition to being more secure. One commonly used SSH program is PuTTy, a freeware program that will allow you to use SSH. A more powerful program is SecureCRT, but this program is not freeware. If you use a Macintosh, NiftyTelnet 1.1 SSH r3 is a freeware SSH utility you can download.

Twitter Feed

If you use the social networking and microblogging service Twitter, you might want to add a public Twitter timeline to your website.
